Injuries to your feet can happen at any time, but you’re at a higher risk of injury if you’re wearing ill-fitting shoes. But how do you know what to look for in a recreational shoe, an athletic option or a work boot? Below, we share some tips for picking out the right pair of shoes for any occasion.
Footwear Guide
When it comes to finding the right pair of shoes for any occasion, the best piece of advice we can give is to find something that is comfortable. Comfort should trump fashion at all costs. If your foot is uncomfortable in the shoe, you’re going to be putting undue stress on your foot, and that can lead to injury.
Aside from finding a comfortable option, keep these tips in mind when buying your next pair of shoes or boots:
- Have both of your feet measured every time you buy shoes, because your feet change as you get older.
- Shoes should be fitted to your toes as well as to your heel.
- There should be between 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch from the end of your longest toe to the end of the shoe.
- Try on shoes before you buy, because sizes can vary by manufacturer.
- Try on the shoes at the end of your day, as your feet usually swell a little throughout the day.
- Avoid wearing shoes with a heel higher than 2 and 1/4 inches. If you have to wear this type of shoe, do so in moderation.
- Walk around in the shoes to see how they feel. Don’t just see how they fit, see how they feel.
- If the shoes are too tight, don’t assume that you’ll be able to “break them in.”
- Avoid narrow toe box shoes, as they can contribute to the onset of bunions.
- Check your child’s foot size every couple months, because they can grow very quickly.
- Don’t assume hand-me-downs will fit for every child, as one may have a wider shoe or a higher arch.
- If you need to wear a heel or another less-supportive option, be sure to pack a more comfy pair to switch into later.
- A cheaper shoe is typically a less durable shoe. Don’t be afraid to spend a little more for a supportive and durable footwear option.
