The Minnesota Vikings moved to 1-0 with at 28-6 thrashing of the New York Giants yesterday, but they lost one of their best skill players to an ankle injury. Wide receiver Jordan Addison was knocked out of the contest in the third quarter with an ankle injury and was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the game.
The Vikings received some good news after an initial round of testing, as NFL Insider Ian Rapoport said the team believes Addison avoided a major injury to his ankle, although further testing is still necessary. You can take a look at the injury that sidelined Addison in the video below.

It’s a little difficult to see in the video, but Addison’s right ankle gets bent awkwardly when the Giants defender attempts to make a tackle. It appears that his ankle rolls inward while in a flexed position, which can be associated with a high ankle sprain and damage to the more supportive deltoid ankle ligaments. If that is the case, it’s possible that Addison could miss about 2-4 weeks as he heals and works to restabilize the ankle ligaments. Restrengthening the ligaments is crucial if Addison wants to regain his explosive speed and reduce his risk of future ankle injuries.
The video is a little difficult to clearly decipher, so the fact that the Vikings appear optimistic about his future suggests that Addison may not be dealing with a true high ankle sprain, If the damage is minimal, he may not miss any time, and it’s clear that he did not suffer a major sprain or a fracture during the awkward tackle.
Given the fact that Addison just worked hard to return from an ankle injury on his other foot, it seems likely that the team will try to be a little more cautious with their second-year receiver. If there is any doubt about the strength of either ankle, they’ll want to play it safe and focus on his recovery so that ankle injuries don’t continue to plague him throughout his career. Again, we’re working with some limited information here, but given the expected damage to the deltoid ligaments and the fact that he worked through a different ankle injury in the past, we’d venture to guess that Addison will miss a week or two with his latest injury. We’ll likely get an official update in the next 24-48 hours, but don’t be surprised if the Vikings try to continue their winning ways in Week 2 against the 49ers without Addison.
Here’s hoping the injury is actually a minor one and it’s the last ankle injury for Addison and the Vikings. We’ll keep tabs on him and the rest of the team as the year progresses. Keep up the winning ways!
