Oops she did it again! Britney Spears has once again been sidelined with an injury. She previously cancelled a tour after suffering a knee injury while shooting a music video, and now she’s on the mend after breaking the fifth metatarsal in her foot while dancing.
Spears actually posted video of the injury to her Instagram page. You can see video of the injury below. While it’s not visibly awkward, you can clearly hear the bone break as she nears the end of her 28-second dance clip.
Dr. Silverman Comments
This is a classic story in terms of how fifth metatarsal bones fracture.
If you pause the video at the right moment, you can see that Britney’s left ankle rolls inward. When the ankle rolls on a flat surface like this, there is usually an underlying issue here, like pre-existing ankle ligament damage or hindfoot instability. The stress that is displaced on the fifth metatarsal during this inward roll overpowers the bone, leading to a fracture at the base of the bone.
The good news for Spears is that as long as the fracture is stable and non-displaced, it tends to heal just fine with typical conservative treatment. Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation (RICE), along with activity modification should work just fine for Spears. Odds are she’ll be back on her feet dancing in a few short weeks.
We wish her all the best in her recovery.
