Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Derrick Rose left Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers with right ankle soreness, and on Friday he told reporters that he was dealing with a ligament issue in the ankle.
Rose was held out of Friday and Sunday’s games, and his status for Wednesday’s game against the Grizzlies is up in the air. Rose told media reporters that he’s trying to get better as quick as possible and is going through a lot of treatment.
Injuries have been the story of Derrick Rose’s career, but it’s been his ankles that have bothered him this season. He initially suffered the right ankle injury on December 21 against the Spurs, and then he aggravated the injury a week later against the Hawks. The aggravation caused Rose to miss six games, and he returned to the lineup on January 11. However, it’s clear that he’s still dealing with lingering ligament issues, as he’s been dealing with soreness that has cost him the past two and a half games.
Get The Surgery
We understand why Rose wants to manage the condition with conservative care during the season, but if he really wants to get healthy and continue his career, he should opt for offseason ankle ligament reconstruction surgery. The surgery has a phenomenal rate of success, and it virtually eliminates these recurrent ankle sprains that are causing this lingering pain.
Other injuries he’s dealt with in his career can be tied back to these weakened ankle ligaments. He’s had delays in recovery from ACL surgery and from his meniscus repair, and those delays are at least somewhat tied to gait abnormalities and other ankle issues caused by these loose ankle ligaments.
I think Derrick Rose has been the most blogged about athlete on this site, outside of maybe Steph Curry, but the common theme between those two is that they tend to opt for conservative treatment instead of taking more time off and truly fixing the problem with surgery. I understand when the season is on the line that it may make sense to look to the short term, but during the offseason, Rose needs to have the surgery performed. If he doesn’t, injuries are going to continue to plague his career, and that can cause problems for more than just his foot.
Here’s hoping he can find a way to stay healthy and then get the highly successful surgery in the not-so-distant future.
