Last Sunday, Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose rolled his ankle in the second quarter of a game against the Knicks.
Rose came back in to finish out Sunday’s game and lead the team to victory, but he’s been benched since. Sunday was Rose’s first game after missing the 12 previous due to a groin injury.
“If it’s a close game or one I want to get, I’m going to continue to play,” Rose said. “I ended up making it worse. It’s just an ankle sprain. Hopefully, I’ll be over it in a couple of days.”
Rose has had a long list of injuries this season including a turf toe injury during a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves back in January. He has also injured his groin and back this season. Coach Tom Thibodeau doesn’t think the injuries are related, but some medical experts would beg to differ.
“Coach Tom Thibodeau is quoted saying the injuries aren’t related per his medical team,” says orthopedic specialist Dr. Lance Silverman. “Derrick Rose has an unstable ankle. This means his ankle wants to roll out to the side. Having a stable core is one of the most important ways to prevent all injuries, especially ankle injuries. A groin injury weakens the core. Derrick landed on the other player’s foot and his now weaker core was too exhausted to keep his balance. Not related—I don’t think so.”
Rose is confident he’ll return before season’s end.
