On Friday, Dr. Silverman became the first surgeon in the Twin Cities to perform the PROstep minimally invasive surgery for bunion correction. He performed the procedure at Greenway Surgery Center in Minneapolis, making him the first surgeon to successfully complete the operation in the Twin Cities. And we’re excited to announce that everything went as planned during the operation, and we expect a shortened and complete patient recovery!
The surgery is wonderfully small, as only a couple microincisions the size of a few millimeters are made in order to access the bunion site. The surgery is performed using a live x-ray, allowing the surgeon to visualize the bony deformity. From there, the excess bone is removed using a rotating burr instead of the standard sagittal saw. This burr is both high torque and low speed, which allows the surgeon to reshape the bone while also generating minimal heat and reducing the risk of nearby soft tissue and nerve damage.
Other benefits of the procedure include:
- Less pain and discomfort during recovery.
- Quicker recovery and return to function.
- Reduced damage to nearby tissues.
- Reduced likelihood of infection and wound complications compared to open procedure.
A Surgical First
Dr. Silverman said he was excited heading into the operation because he knew it had the potential to be the best thing for the patient. He had conducted several practice runs on cadavers to hone in his technique, and he admitted he had been looking forward to the procedure for weeks. He left the procedure feeling confident and quite relieved that everything went as expected, and he’s hoping that he can help more people in the future who fit the profile for PROstep bunion correction.
