Although it’s not technically summer just yet, the warm weather means more people are hitting the lakes and beaches each weekend. Fun in the sun can be just that, but going barefoot means your feet are prone to more injuries. Today, we take a closer look at four common foot and ankle injuries suffered on the beach.
1. Cuts – As we mentioned above, going barefoot can leave you susceptible to injuries. One such injury is a cut on your foot. Whether it’s from a sharp shell on the beach, or a rock hidden under the water, your feet can take a beating on the beach. To prevent this, watch where you’re walking, and consider wearing aqua shoes in the water if there is rough terrain.
2. Sunburn – Most people are conscious about applying sunscreen when they’re at the beach, but oftentimes they forget about their feet. Even if you get your feet at the beginning of the day, a lot of people just re-apply to their head, ears, neck, shoulders, arms and chest. Don’t forget about your lower body! Getting sunburn on your feet will make it very painful to wear shoes in the coming days.
3. Ankle Sprains – Ankle sprains aren’t uncommon for active beachgoers. Beach volleyball always carries a risk of ankle sprains, and recent statistics found that an ankle sprain is the most common injury suffered by waterskiers. They aren’t always easy to prevent, so just be careful when you’re diving for an errant serve or showing off outside the wake!
4. Diabetic Foot Risk – People with diabetes need to be especially careful on a daytrip to the beach. A small foot injury can snowball into a much larger problem if an infection ensues. Strap or thong sandals can be problematic if they rub or cause an abrasion on a person’s feet. Protect your feet as much as possible, and if you do suffer a cut or scrap, clean and properly address the wound.
