A new study shows that getting kids to eat healthy is best accomplished by setting a good example, rather than force or a rewards/punishment system.
The study, helmed by scientists from the University of Michigan, focuses specifically on the eating habits of low-income parents and their children. Researchers found that children were more likely to have healthy diets if their parents set a good example by eating healthy themselves, than parents who ordered their kids to eat healthy.
“Mothers should stop forcing or restricting their kids’ eating,” said MSU professor of food science and human nutrition, Sarah Hoerr. “They’d be better off providing a healthy food environment, adopting balanced eating habits themselves and covertly controlling their children’s diet quality by not bringing less healthy foods into the house.”

We act as role models by demonstrating admirable behavior to our children. This is especially true in children’s sports. Soccer and Hockey Moms/Dads create a positive, fun environment for kids.
We act as role models by demonstrating a good work ethic to our children.
We treat others with respect in front of our children and to teach them to act similarly (Do unto others as you would have them do to you). We do this because we know that children watch our behavior and incorporate it into their own behavior. Actions speak louder than words.
With this in mind, it is not surprising that healthy behaviors such as eating are best demonstrated to our children rather than lectured and regimented.
