The Boston Marathon is under way and more than 600 runners from the great state of Minnesota have decided to trek the 26.2 miles through one of our nation’s most historic cities.
Included in the 600 Minnesotans are 212 runners who are heading back to Boston to finish what they started last year. Those individuals were unable to complete the race after two bombs were detonated near the finish line. Three spectators were killed and another 260 were injured by the blasts.
The 2014 race is expected to set numerous records, as more than 36,000 runners signed up for the race. Although that number fell just short of the 38,708 individuals who participated in the 100th annual race in 1996, this year still has the chance to have a record number of finishers, which stands at 35,708. Over 1 million spectators are expected to attend this year’s race, more than double last year’s total.

The Boston Marathon is such a wonderful event, and this year’s event will hold special meaning for runners and spectators alike. I’m sure the scene in Boston today is one of immense pride and fervor.
If you are inspired by the effort you see during today’s race, make a plan to run a race this summer. It doesn’t have to be a full marathon; start with something simple like a 5K, and work your way up from there. Running is a great way to relieve stress and get in shape.
If you’re a regular runner looking to take on a bigger challenge, think about signing up for a half marathon or full marathon. As we noted in a previous blog, the average training program for a marathon is 20 weeks, which gives you plenty of time to get ready for a September or October marathon.
If running a marathon isn’t your thing, but you’re interested in exploring new areas of the Cities or meeting like-minded people, consider joining one of the many running clubs in the Twin Cities. Running with a buddy can be fun, and you’ll explore scenic areas of the Cities that you may not have otherwise seen.
I wish the best of luck to those runners competing in today’s marathon. You truly are an inspiration to us all.
