A new book by French author Jean-Philippe Leclaire called “Why Whites Run Slower” examines the dominance of black runners in the Olympics from a genetic viewpoint.
Many have shied away from the topic for fear of being labeled racist, but the data is overwhelming. The last 25 record holders for the 100-metre dash have all been of West African origin.
Leclaire consulted scientists, journalists, and athletes to investigate the link between athletic ability and an athlete’s native country. His research led him to the conclusion that “athletic performance is largely determined by genetics and specifically ACTN3, the so-called ‘sprint gene’”.
This gene is present in all humans in two forms – one form boosts endurance, and the other increases speed. Leclaire’s data shows that the speed gene is more common in those with West African origins, and the endurance gene is more common in those with East African origins.
However, this research does not mean that all West Africans are amazing sprinters. Training is an equally important component.
Dr. Silverman Comments
Genetics and Environment explain why certain sports are dominated by certain ethnic origin groups. It’s the elephant in the room that so few people seem able to acknowledge but it’s not a surprise by any means.
Research quoted in this article suggests that if you are of West African Origin you are more likely to possess a gene (likely several genes) that helps you sprint. If you are of East African origin, you are more likely to possess a gene that helps your endurance. More research supports that elite athletes have different percentages of certain genes that determine muscle function.
But, it means very little if you don’t have the will, the determination, and the social (emotional and financial) support to train.
It’s the universal truth: Genetics and Environment are the most powerful determinants. If you want to be the best you can be, find your inherent strengths and develop them. Don’t try to be something you are not and don’t think that because it comes easily to you it doesn’t require work.
