The results of a new study have shown that vitamin C can help avoid bone loss and fight Osteoporosis.
Researchers at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine conducted an experiment on three groups of mice. Two of the groups had their ovaries removed – a procedure that reduced bone density. The mice in one of these two groups were given high doses of Vitamin C for 8 weeks. The third group of mice acted as a control group and did not have their ovaries removed. Researchers then measured bone mineral density in all three groups.
The mice that had their ovaries removed and were given vitamin C had roughly the same levels of bone density as the control group. In contrast, the mice that were not given doses of vitamin C had significantly lower levels of bone density. This led researchers to the conclusion that vitamin C can help prevent bone loss.
Vitamin C has been linked to healthy bones for some time, but this is the first time a study involving animals has proved that vitamin C can help preserve bone density.
