Procedure: Ankle Ligament Reconstruction
What was your initial medical issue?
I broke my left foot in 2013 at softball practice in college. I had two prior surgeries to get hardware put in my foot and then taken out. The pain in my foot never went away.
What did this issue prevent you doing?
My injury made working out and training for a D2 college sport extremely difficult. It was a constant struggle of how to control the pain well enough so that I could still compete competitively. Anything high impact was tough which made my one job for softball, pitching, a struggle.
What made you decide to do something about your problem?
I played through the rest of my eligibility with pain in my foot and went back to different doctors when I moved home. I couldn’t take no for an answer when doctors were telling me there was nothing more they could do, and when they couldn’t figure out what was wrong.
Why did you choose Dr. Silverman?
I was referred to Dr. Silverman by a doctor from the pain clinic at North Memorial. He told me that Dr. Silverman was a foot and ankle specialist and told me how great he was.
What treatment/procedure did you have done?
I had ankle ligament reconstruction surgery, and Dr. Silverman also went into my foot and fixed a small tear I had in a muscle.
How did you feel after treatment?
I felt great after treatment. Compared to my other two surgeries the recovery seemed to go much smoother this time around. Dr. Silverman called the day after surgery to check in and to see how everything was going which was awesome. I was in a hard cast the first two weeks which limited what I could do, but I found it easy to get back to my daily life towards the end of the two weeks in that cast, and when I transitioned to the walking boot and ankle brace.
What advice would you give other patients in a similar situation to you?
I would tell them to do something about it as soon as they can, because I wish I would have found Dr. Silverman sooner. The experience I had with Dr. Silverman was awesome. He is knowledgeable, personable, and the atmosphere at the office and surgery center made me feel comfortable and eased my nerves. I hadn’t even thought about my ankle being a component in my foot pain, but I am living with no pain in my foot for the first time in 3 years and couldn’t be happier about my experience.
