Chicago Bears running back, Matt Forte, was injured during last week’s game against the Green Bay Packers. The injury was reported to be a “high ankle sprain.”
The injury occurred in the third quarter when another player rolled on top of Forte’s ankle after he had just made a reception.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Bears believe the injury to be a high ankle sprain. But as we’ve discussed before, reporters and teams often use the term high ankle sprain incorrectly.
Dr. Silverman Comments
Enough with the high ankle sprain mis-reporting. These sports reporters have no idea what these terms actually mean. Even Lovie Smith tried to clear them up 2 days ago saying, “It’s not a high ankle sprain.”
A high ankle sprain comes from a twist of the foot outwards (like Charlie Chaplin). An ankle sprain comes from a roll of the foot inwards.
These are 2 completely different mechanisms of injury, with 2 completely different recovery periods, and prognoses.
Let’s get this ankle sprain terminology right.
