Easter has come and gone, and odds are you have some leftover Easter candy still hanging around the house. There’s not a lot of candy in your Easter basket that’s healthy for you, unless Peter Cottontail left you some of his carrots, but here’s a look at five of the worst Easter candies for your health.
5. Peeps – Nobody really likes peeps, but somehow they always seem to make an appearance at your annual Easter get-together. Eating one peep is alright, but most peep eaters have at least a few. One peep is packed with 28 calories and 7g of sugar, meaning you need to walk for 7 minutes to burn off that peep.
4. Jelly Beans – Similar to peeps, jelly beans really aren’t that bad for you if you only have one or two, but let’s be honest, who only eats one jelly bean? Each small jelly bean contains 4 calories and 1g of sugar, while larger beans contain 11 calories and nearly 3g of sugar, so it’s easy to see how a handful of jelly beans can put you over 100 calories and half your daily recommended amount of sugar. Just 10 large jelly beans means you’ll need to walk for a half hour to burn off those calories.
3. Assorted Miniature Chocolates – Snacking on a few miniature chocolates might seem like a healthier option than grabbing a full size bar, but those little candies can add up quickly. For example, miniature Snickers (not to be confused with “fun-sized” bars) contain 43 calories. You can fit two or three of these mini candies in each Easter egg, so it’s easy to go overboard and end up with a lot of them in your Easter basket. You’ll need to walk on the treadmill for almost an hour if you inhaled 5 miniature chocolate bars over the Easter weekend.
2. Cadbury Egg – The Cadbury Egg is an Easter staple, but they certainly aren’t very good for your health. According to Hersey’s website, a Cadbury Creme Egg is packed with 20g of sugar and 150 calories. The caramel eggs are even worse, as they are loaded with an extra 20 calories. In order to burn those calories off, you need to walk for 44 minutes, jog for 19 minutes, or swim for 14 minutes.
1. The Chocolate Bunny – The Russell Stover Chocolate Bunny is something everyone should avoid this Easter. It may look tempting, but that 1.5oz bunny is loaded with 240 calories, and 126 of those calories are from fat. Packed with 23g of sugar, this chocolate bunny should be shared among siblings over the course of a few days. Downing this bunny in one sitting means you’ll need to walk for over an hour to burn off all those unnecessary calories.
