Last summer I shared a blog post titled “The Weight of Honor.” You can read about it by clicking on the link, but the post talked about a film that was being produced that took a look at how life changes for military families after their loved one returns home from service with a catastrophic injury.
The scars these military members suffer are clearly visible, but there are invisible emotional and mental scars that both service members and the loved ones who care for them must also deal with. As I mentioned in the previous post, the film is being produced and directed by Stephanie Seldin Howard, a regular cable news contributor, Los Angeles News Emmy winner, and for the sake of full disclosure, a cousin of mine.
I certainly have a familial connection with the film, but the piece also hits home on the professional level. I do everything in my power to help fix a person’s physical wounds and injuries, but oftentimes healing needs to take place on more than just a physical level. This film explores the other side of the coin.
Transitioning To Caregiver
Family members never expect their loved one to return home from service with an injury, but when they do, the shifting roles can challenge everyone involved. We often think about the physical challenges a veteran will face after returning home from service with an injury, but this film explores the challenges faced by caregivers after their loved one returns home with a life-changing injury.
“As Americans we’re predisposed to think about the sacrifices and challenges of our veterans. As a filmmaker I was compelled to dig deeper by looking at the impact The War on Terror has had on Family Caregivers,” said Howard. “These selfless individuals are the unsung heroes, caring for our veterans against insurmountable odds, often without the respect or recognition they deserve, and often without the support they need.”
The film is expected to be released later this summer, and I hope you’ll consider checking it out when it does. You can see the new trailer for the film below.
