As we preach every year at the annual Our Hearts To Your Soles charity event, you can’t underscore the importance of a quality winter boot when the weather gets cold here in Minnesota. But what should you look for in a winter boot if you’re looking to update your footwear this season? Below, we share some tips to help you pick out a pair of winter boots that will protect your feet throughout the season.
Winter Boot Buying Tips
Here’s a look at the most important factors if you want to keep your feet injury free during the cold and sometimes slippery Minnesota winters.
1. Traction – Traction is key. Find a pair with good grip or deeper grooves to help give you better traction on snow and ice. We always treat a few broken ankles this time of year because someone slipped and fell on a patch of ice, so invest in a pair that will help keep you upright. If you’re not sure how to tell which boots offer the most traction, ask an associate or do some research online.
2. Comfort – Comfort is usually the top factor to keep in mind, because if your foot is comfortable, it is probably stabilized and supported by the shoe. Stability and support are two key factors you’ll want in a winter boot, and usually you can check both these boxes if your foot feels comfortable in the boot. Try walking around a bit to see if everything stays comfortable while you’re moving.
3. Durability – It’s not always easy to tell which boots are going to last the longest, but if you buy a cheap or flimsy winter boot, not only could you be more likely to suffer a fall, but if the boot breaks down, your feet may be exposed to the outside conditions. Price doesn’t always determine quality, but again, do some research or read reviews to see what others are saying about the durability of the winter boot you’re considering.
4. Insulation – Finally, winters in Minnesota can be cold, so another factor to consider is investing in a boot that will keep your feet warm. Most winter boots will have a weather rating that will include how cold it can get before your feet will begin to feel the effects of the weather. Depending on whether you’re using these as winter work boots or just to take the kids sledding at the park, find a weather rating that will keep your feet protected from the cold winter weather.
